WHAT IS NGER?
The National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (NGER) Act 2007 is the national framework under which Australian corporations must quantitatively report greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption and production.
Compliance with NGER is mandatory for corporations and facilities which exceed certain emission or energy consumption thresholds, and penalties of up to $226,000 apply for failing to register or report.
The NGER Act underpins Australia’s proposed emissions trading scheme, the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS), but has now been delayed until at least 2013. NGER provides the data necessary to inform the public, meet Australia’s international reporting obligations and assist government policy formulation.
If your organisation is required to report under NGER you will need to be able to accurately determine your greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption and production.
For larger entities with complex corporate structures, changes in ownership during the reporting period or industrial processes on multiple sites, reporting activities under the NGER Act is not a simple task.
